The Party

A lonely middle-aged man and a teenaged girl find themselves alone together at a party, where the chance to speak honestly to each other is too tempting to resist. Eric Maierson's short film explores what happens next. See the project at http://mediastorm.com/publication/the-party

In the movie, "The Party" by the folks at Mediastorm a few acquaintances have a small little party of mature people. One could say the age range was 36-50ish. In this party, a man wanders through the house, and ends up going into the basement. Upon stepping down the stairs, he finds a young woman, a teenager who's 15 years old, smoking weed. Upon catching her, he joins the her and start to have a conversation. In their unwrapping, and unraveling, they seem to expose, a sort of loneliness in themselves. The teenager discusses how no one pays attention to her, and the older male tells the story of his divorce. From this alone, it feels that they are trying to get sympathy from each other. Telling a sob story, so that they would listen, or maybe just for the attention. The man feeling vulnerable after a divorce, and the teen just wanting to feel noticed. The sympathy from both the teen and the man leads to something else, a misinterpretation. In this event, the fifteen year old climbs onto the man and start to kiss. The man rejects the advancements coming from a teen. The man asks her why did she do that. She says that it's what she thought he wanted, because he told that sob story. The kiss could mean one of too things, or both. The teen felt a sort of attachment, or a bond to the man, and had a momentary attraction, based on their similar circumstances. Or it could mean that the man was actually trying to see how far he could go, and if it went too far, he would relent. He may have intended to come across in that tone, a "Come pet me, and feel sorry for me" because he wanted attention from someone since his wife left him. Overall, the message of the video seemed to convey that the misconception can lead to a very bad situation. The video also lacks a soundtracks to maybe emphasize more on the protagonists of the film.

  2. When I watched the movie I felt so uncomfortable watching this all go down. The desperate loneliness of the man was very sad due to his longing. The girls loneliness seemed more innocent to me. I appreciate that you saw the lack of clear understanding between the two of them. I gt it though. She is a teenager and not understand what he was getting out. I can see how young people can get in some situations. Sad and scary at the same time.
